II. λόγος (logos) 

διὸ δεῖ ἕπεσθαι τῷ (ξυνῷ, τουτέστι τῷ) κοινῷ· ξυνὸς γὰρ ὁ κοινός. τοῦ λόγου δὲ ἐόντος ξυνοῦ ζώουσιν οἱ πολλοὶ ὡς ἰδίαν ἔχοντες φρόνησιν.

Siten meidän on seurattava yhteistä, mutta vaikka logos on yhteinen, useimmat elävät kuin heillä olisi oma ymmärrys

So we must follow the common, yet the many live as if they had a wisdom of their own. Though wisdom is common, yet the many live as if they had a wisdom of their own.

XII πάντα ῥεῖ (panta rhei) – kaikki virtaa

ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμβαίνουσιν, ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ.

  • You cannot step (ἐμϐαίνουσιν) twice into the same (αὐτοῖσιν) rivers (ποταμοῖσι) ; for fresh (ἕτερα) waters (ὕδατα) are flowing (ἐπιρρεῖ) in upon you.
  • Et voi astua  (ἐμϐαίνουσιν) kahdesti samaan (αὐτοῖσιν) jokeen (ποταμοῖσι); sillä uudet (ἕτερα) vedet (ὕδατα) virtavat (ἐπιρρεῖ) ohitsesi

λέγει που Ἡράκλειτος ὅτι ‘πάντα χωρεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει,’ καὶ ποταμοῦ ῥοῇ ἀπεικάζων τὰ ὄντα λέγει ὡς ‘δὶς ἐς τὸν αὐτὸν ποταμὸν οὐκ ἂν ἐμβαίης.

  • Herakleitoshan sanoo, kaikki vaihtaa paikkaa eikä mikään pysy paikallaan ja hän vertaa kaikkea virtaavaan jokeen sanoen ettet voi astua samaan jokeen. (Platon: Cratylos 402a)
  • ’Heracleitus says, you know, that all things change and nothing remains still, and he likens the universe to the current of a river, saying that you cannot step twice into the same stream.

τὰ ὄντα ἰέναι τε πάντα καὶ μένειν οὐδέν

  • Evyrthing moves and nothing remains still.
