I have collected regular written feedback from students and discussed about the teaching and learning methods with them as also reflect the feedback yearly. (Example.) On this basis, I have continuously tried to develop my teaching as also introduced new teaching methods and technologies.

The student feedback from the lectures had been generally highly positive with only some exceptions. The comments had varied from overwhelming praise (“infinitely interesting course”, “the best course I have never been”) to the more laconic statements: “thanks for the very interesting course”.

On average, the topics of the lectures had been considered to be “interesting” or “very interesting”. No one has never considered the courses as “totally uninteresting” and even those that had not been so interested in the topics beforehand, had written that the courses aroused in them a new interest in the topics they had not thought before and made them finally to comprehend thinkers they have heard a lot, but never understood.

Interest, expertise and inspiration are the epithets most often mentioned in the positive remarks.

The courses are constantly described as being very 1) interesting. The teacher is acclaimed to have super 2) expertise on the subject matters and the teaching style is felt to be very stimulating and 3) inspirational.

The teacher is described as being “highly skilled and knowledgeable” and “inspirational“. There has been also positive comments on teacher’s pondering in lectures, on his humour and lively and vivid speech, as his ability to share knowledge and get people excited about it.

The in-depth handling of the issues, the thought-provoking subject matters, as the profundity, amount and fluency of given information had received positive comments.

The courses have been felt to be useful and even “very useful” for students preparing their own thesis.

Students had also liked and cherished the old style expertise lectures, even the pedagogues seem to nowadays to despise them

Especially active and research orientated students had praised the courses and acclaimed that here the subject matters are finally taught properly.

Yet also more passive students had praised the courses as offering good cultural education and being motivating as making difficult things understandable.

As a teacher of research seminars and supervisor, I have got positive comments on encouraging discussions and creating good group atmosphere, as also being a motivating guide, who is able to give helpful and needful advice.

 

Of course, during the last twenty years, there has also been exceptions. There is always also some students, who are convinced that they can produce perfect thesis from their inborn superior abilities and opinions. Some of these had got very furious when I have Socratically test their “inborn qualities”.

Negative feedback – What there is to improve

In the early years, there were some negative comments on teaching technologies and materials. This made me deliberately to develop them and after giving special attention to the course infrastructure (materials, handouts, digital environments) I have started to receive very positive comments on them.

In the beginning, I also get negative comments on my voice control as my voice started to break in the end lectures. So I went to a special voice training course to learn better breathing technologies.

Afterward, the comments have been varied. Some students are especially praising what they think as my clear and vivid speech and lucid expression, some claim that I still speak too fast, which makes it hard to follow the lectures.

In the negative side of the feedback, the complaints about “speed” and “haste” are most common together with the complaints about early hours (8 a.m. lecture).

Students had also felt that the courses are too short, which is sometimes considered as a positive, sometimes as a negative remark and that there has been too much information and work.

The effort to say too much in too little time seems still to be my major problem even I have tried to cut the amount of information and make the courses more tightly focused.

However, this is not made easier by the fact that there seems to be less and less time and resources for teaching in academy and yet more and more things demanded in the study units and overall study curriculum.

Students themselves had often been annoyed of too short courses and hoped for longer and more extensive ones.
